Munibung Creek rehabilitation

We're rehabilitating the section of Munibung Creek between Pendlebury Road and 71 Lachlan Road to stabilise the creek bank and improve the environment. Early work started in late 2024, with main work to rehabilitate Munibung Creek now underway.

About Munibung Creek

Hunter Water owns a natural open section of Munibung Creek between Pendlebury Road through to Gorleston Terrace in Cardiff. It runs behind an industrial zone on Pendlebury Road and behind houses on Lachlan Road.

This section of the creek is degraded, and has eroding banks, high volumes of waste and rubbish within it, and an extensive weed population.

Project objectives

We’re focusing on stabilising the sections of the creek that will reap the greatest benefits as soon as possible. Rehabilitating the southern section of Munibung Creek will:

  • prevent further erosion
  • improve the natural environment
  • reduce build-up of rubbish and weeds
  • protect adjoining properties.

Project timeline

  1. Community consultation: 2019 - 2020

  4. Southern section rehabilitation work starts: from late 2024
  5. Southern section rehabilitation work to be finished: from October 2025, depending on the weather

Frequently asked questions

  • When will work begin?

Construction on the southern section of the creek started in late 2024.

  • What will the benefits be?

We’re focusing on stabilising the sections of the creek that will reap the greatest benefits as soon as possible.

Rehabilitating the southern section of Munibung Creek will prevent further erosion, improve the natural environment, reduce build-up of rubbish and weeds and protect adjoining properties.

While the work will stabilise the creek banks, it will not increase the capacity of the creek or impact on flooding.

  • How long will the work take?

We expect the work will be finished around October 2025, assuming the weather is fine and there are no major issues.

  • Who will do the work?

We’ve engaged an expert state government agency, NSW Soil Conservation Services, to complete the work on our behalf

  • What can I expect during construction?

At times we will use machinery that generate dust and noise, and some of our construction activity may generate vibration. We will make every effort to minimise these impacts.

Additionally, there will be a site compound located on the parcel of land between 87 and 89 Lachlan Road.

We aim to minimise inconvenience and will ensure you are informed of planned works before they start.

  • Will you need to access my backyard?

We will need access to some private properties to complete the work.

If we need to access through your property at any time we will be in touch with you in advance.

  • Will you need to acquire any land?

Partial acquisition of a small number of private properties will likely be required for this work. Initial discussions with these landowners took place in 2019-2020. Our Property Team has been in touch with affected landowners to discuss the process.

  • When will the northern section be rehabilitated?

While we intended to rehabilitate the full length of the creek between Pendlebury Road and Gorleston Terrace, this is no longer financially feasible. To complete the design in its entirety will cost more than originally anticipated and will stretch beyond the funding available for this project.

Once work on the southern section is finished, we will explore funding options to rehabilitate the northern section of the creek – from 71 Lachlan Road to Gorleston Terrace.
