Digital Metering Program

Hunter Water is trialling digital water meters as part of a two-year pilot program at selected homes and commercial properties.

Digital meters automatically record your water use and send it to Hunter Water securely. This means:

  • You can track your water use more easily
  • Leaks can be detected sooner
  • Meter readings happen without someone visiting your property

The program will help us understand how digital meters could improve water services in the future.

What is a digital water meter?

A digital water meter works the same way as a traditional meter and measures how much water you use. The difference is that it automatically sends your meter readings to Hunter Water through a secure network.

  • How is it different to existing water meters?

Traditional meters need to be read manually, usually by someone visiting your property.
    Digital meters:

    • Record water use automatically
    • Send readings securely through a communications network
    • Give you and Hunter Water near real-time information about your water use
  • What data is collected?

Your digital meter only records information about your water use and the meter itself. This includes:

    • Property address
    • Meter number
    • Volume of water used

It also sends basic technical information about the meter, such as battery status, signal strength and tamper alerts.

No personal details (like your name or contact information) are stored on the meter.

The meter records your water use in regular intervals and securely transmits this information to Hunter Water once a day.

  • Is my data secure?

Yes. All data is encrypted when it is sent, stored securely and handled in line with Hunter Water’s privacy statement. Your water use information is only available to you and authorised personnel.

  • Will my water bill change?

No. There will be no change to your water bill or how you are billed. During the initial phase of the pilot, Hunter Water will continue to read the meter as usual.

However, as the meter provides more frequent data, it could help detect leaks, potentially lowering your bill.

What area and properties were chosen for the pilot program?

Our pilot program is being rolled out to around 5000 houses across 200 suburbs within the Hunter Water network. If your property is selected, we will contact you directly.

We have also chosen 100 commercial properties to receive digital water loggers.

Properties were chosen based on the types of use we need to test and the underground water infrastructure. This means your property may be included while a neighbouring property is not.

The installation process

  • Our installation partner, Service Stream, will install the digital meter at your property.
  • Installation usually takes less than 30 minutes. You do not have to be at home.
  • Residential customers may experience no water or low water pressure while the meter is changed.
  • Commercial customers will receive digital water loggers and will not experience a disruption to their water supply
  • The digital meter and installation are free as part of the pilot.
  • After installation, your new meter will automatically begin recording and sending your water use data.
