Rehabilitating our stormwater system
Hunter Water is investing over $20 million to rehabilitate our stormwater network at the following locations:
- Turton Road, Lambton
- Platt Street, Waratah
- Macquarie Street, Mayfield
- Christo Road, Georgetown
- Station Street, Waratah.
We understand there will be impacts on nearby residents and businesses while we carry out these essential upgrades, and we will work closely with our community to minimise the disruption where possible.
Why the work is needed
Our 96 kilometre stormwater network is critical for transferring flows, particular during heavy rainfall events, to minimise flooding impacts on our community.
However, some of our channels, culverts and pipes are ageing and no longer meet our needs and those of our customers.
More information
-
Turton Road
In 2022 we upgraded 100 metres of a stormwater culvert underneath Turton Road and Womboin Road in Lambton.
-
Macquarie Street
In 2025 we installed a new 210 metre stormwater culvert along Macquarie Street and at the intersection of Hanbury Street and Macquarie Street.
We have also upgraded the existing 277 metre stormwater culvert that runs underground between Macquarie Street and Valencia Street.
We engaged a contractor, EIRE Constructions, to complete this work on behalf of Hunter Water.

Work took place in four stages and was completed by our contractor, Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure.
Work occurred underneath Christo Road in Georgetown -
Platt Street
We have relined approximately 132 metres of the underground stormwater culvert, and installed an additional stormwater culvert that passes beneath the intersection of Platt Street and Turton Road, and partly runs parallel with the railway line in Waratah.
Work at Platt Street was completed by our contractor, Abergeldie Complex Infrastructure.
Work was completed beneath the intersection of Platt Street and Turton Road, as well as parallel with the railway line in Waratah -
Station Street
We will be replacing an existing stormwater culvert under Alfred Street, Ada Street, Grove Street and Tighe Street in Waratah. Work will involve excavation of the road surface to access, remove and replace the existing stormwater culvert in each location.
This work will help improve the long-term resilience and performance of the stormwater network in the area.
Site investigations were completed in April/ May 2025.
Main construction works are expected to start in the second half of 2025.
