Cessnock trunk water main upgrade

The Cessnock region is one of the Hunter’s major growth areas. By 2030, it is expected that there will be an additional 5,800 residential and business connections to the water supply network.

The streets of Cessnock where part of the new water trunk main will be installed

To help cater for this growth, we will be delivering a multi-stage package of water network upgrades in Cessnock over the next four years. These upgrades will also improve water supply for customers who sometimes experience low water pressure and reduce the risk of major water supply interruptions.

The first stage of this upgrade is building a new watermain in Cessnock, between the Maitland Road and David Street intersection through to Westcott Street, with additional works from Westcott Street still to be confirmed. The reservoir on Millfield Street will also be demolished as part of the project.

Frequently asked questions

  • What kind of disruptions should I expect during construction?

During construction there may be traffic disruptions, increased noise, dust, vibration, and temporary impacts to property access. We will keep you updated on our plans to minimise these disruptions.

  • Will there be any impact on my water or wastewater service?

There are no planned water and wastewater outages as part of the water main construction, apart from the work at Maitland Road.

The work on Maitland Road involves connecting the new water main into the existing water network and installing additional infrastructure. Affected residents will be notified in advance of any planned outages.

  • Will the construction impact my driveway or front yard?

The new water main will be installed close to the property boundaries of some landowners. Most of the work will be in the nature strip, road or Council land. Eire Constructions will work closely with those residents affected by temporary access or property disruptions.

  • Will work be carried out outside regular working hours?

Most work will occur between 7am and 6pm, Monday to Friday, and 8 am to 1 pm on Saturdays (weather permitting). If work needs to occur outside of these hours, you will be notified at least a week in advance.

  • Will the construction site be returned to its original condition?

We understand that this work can be disruptive, and we will ensure the site is returned to its original condition once the project is completed.

  • What construction methods will be used for this project?

The project will utilise both open trenching and combined HDD (Horizontal Directional Drilling) and thrust bore drilling techniques. These methods have been designed to minimise disruption, ensure safety, and consider environmental and community factors.

  • Who can I contact if I have any questions or concerns?

If you have any questions or concerns, please contact Eire’s Community Liaison Representative, Amy Sullivan or Casey Mitchell, from Eire on 1300 863 473 or Community@eirecon.com.au
