Keeping stormwater clean

The community plays a vital role to help protect the Hunter region’s creeks and waterways.

While Hunter Water and local councils have systems in place to filter stormwater, everyone can help prevent rubbish, sediment, leaf matter, chemicals and trolleys from entering the network.

Rubbish or trolleys in stormwater drains

Open stormwater channels can become dumping grounds for unwanted items. These block drains, increase flood risks and create an eyesore.

Report dumped rubbish and safety hazards

If you see dumped rubbish or a shopping trolley creating a safety hazard or blocking the flow of water, call our 24 hour customer service team on 1300 657 000

Shopping trolleys

If you see a trolley in a stormwater channel and it is not an immediate hazard, contact the company that owns it.

Help protect our waterways

You can make a big difference with a few simple actions:

  • Dispose of rubbish properly and encourage others to do the same
  • Wash cars on the grass instead of hard surfaces, so detergents soak into the soil and not the stormwater network
  • Sweep leaves, dirt and rubbish away from gutters
  • Give your gardens clear borders so soil does not wash away
  • Put grass clippings in the compost bin or on the garden
  • Pick up your animal's droppings and put them in the bin
  • Return shopping trolleys to the store or trolley bay
  • Dispose of chemicals, pesticides, paints and oils using your local council Household Chemical Clean Out. Contact your council for more information
