Water security for the future

Water security is having enough safe, reliable drinking water to meet the needs of our community now and in the future.

To achieve this, we plan for changing conditions such as drought, climate change and population growth, while protecting the environment and keeping water services affordable.

How we're creating water security

  • Expanding our network's capacity to service growing areas of the Lower Hunter
  • Developing climate-independent water sources, including the Belmont Desalination Plant
  • Exploring future options for diversifying water sources
  • Working with Central Coast Council for our mutually beneficial water transfer arrangement
  • Reducing leaks through smart technology, improved monitoring and faster repairs
  • Partnering with industry and businesses to use water more efficiently with Water Efficiency Management Plans (WEMPs)
  • Empowering the community through ongoing engagement, education, sponsorships and grants

Planning ahead with the Lower Hunter Water Security Plan

The Lower Hunter Water Security Plan (LHWSP) is a whole-of-government plan released by the NSW Government in early 2022.

The LHWSP aims to ensure water security for the Lower Hunter for the next 40 years.

It outlines how we will improve our resilience to drought, increase the diversity of the system, meet the needs of a growing community and keep us adaptable for the future.
