Tankered waste

Tankered waste contractors play an important role in the community by removing liquid wastes from residential, commercial and industrial premises.

The acceptance of tankered waste requires careful management to ensure that the water is safely received and treated to a standard which meets our environmental discharge licences at the receiving treatment plant.

Before you can discharge tankered waste at one of our treatment plants, you will need to have an agreement with us.

How it works

  1. Set up an agreement
Complete the online form below to apply for, renew, or vary, a Tankered Waste Agreement.
  2. Review our Tankering Agreement terms and conditions
Before you can begin discharging tankered waste, you must review the Tankering agreement's terms and conditions. We will then provide you with an Execution Instrument to sign.
  3. Induct each driver
Once your application is approved, register each driver (who will enter our wastewater treatment plants) for a generic and site-specific induction.
  4. Log each disposal
Submit an e-docket each time you dispose tankered liquid waste at one of our treatment plants.
  5. Submit a sample
We’ll let you know when you are required to submit a sample for testing so that we can assess the discharge in compliance with your agreement.

Waste discharge guidelines

There are strict guidelines on what can be discharged at our Wastewater Treatment Plants to ensure compliance with Hunter Water’s Operating Licence granted under the Hunter Water Act 1991. Read more in our Trade Wastewater and Liquid Waste Carriers Standard (PDF, 43 pages, 1MB).

We will not accept liquid waste from outside our operating area.

  • Understand your responsibilities

You have a responsibility to be aware of what liquid waste type you are carrying and where it originated from. This is crucial to providing accurate information to Hunter Water when assessing your application.

For example, did you know that:

    • bringing in liquid waste that originates from outside our area of operations could constitute a breach and potentially lead to a suspension of your agreement?
    • attempting to discharge waste from a truck that is not previously approved and registered on our system could lead to cancellation of your agreement?
  • Monitoring and sampling

We conduct ongoing monitoring and sampling of tanker discharges, by specific tanker sampling direct from the tanker, or more generally to assess the overall discharges and their compliance with your agreement. It is a requirement of Hunter Water’s agreements to submit a sample when required for testing.

  • Charges and billing

To recover the cost of managing the additional load that tankered liquid waste imposes on the treatment plants, tankered waste charges apply.

Your monthly bill may include the following:

    • Annual agreement fee – this is an annual fee that is apportioned over the year and charged monthly.
    • Tanker disposal charge ($/kL) – this is the charge for the tankered waste disposals for the month. It is charged per kilolitre of liquid waste disposed (kL = 1000 litres).
    • Applicable fees including a renewal, variation and after-hours access fee

You will be billed monthly on the 10th business day of the month for the previous month’s charges. For example, all charges for January are billed on the 10th business day of February.
