Knockdown and rebuild
Thinking about knocking down your existing home and rebuilding on the same block?
Before you start, there are some important steps to make sure your water and sewer services are safely disconnected.
Knockdown and rebuild: what does it mean?
A knockdown and rebuild is when an existing home is demolished and a new home is built on the same property.
It is different to a renovation or extension because the existing building and services are fully removed and new connections are usually required.
This means your water and sewer services must be disconnected and then reconnected once building begins.
Disconnecting water and sewer services
Disconnecting your water and sewer stops service and usage charges while your development is underway. If you do not disconnect and submit the required applications, you will keep being charged.
If you want to keep your water and meter connected during construction, you can apply to disconnect only your sewer. You will still receive a Hunter Water bill for water service and usage charges.
Before demolition
You will need a licensed plumber to disconnect your water and sewer services before demolition begins. These must be completed in line with our Wastewater Connection Standard and Water Service Connection Standard.
Once ready, you or your plumber can apply for the disconnections through our portal.
After construction
Once construction is complete, your plumber can reconnect your water and sewer, apply for new connections if needed and arrange for your water meter to be installed.
