Connecting and disconnecting frequently asked questions

We've put together some frequently asked questions to help guide you through the connection and disconnection application process.

  • How do I locate the Hunter Water Reference number for a Development Assessment or Hydraulic Application?

Your builder or plumber will provide you with these details. If they have not done so already, you will need to contact them to retrieve this information.

  • Why does a Section 50 certificate have to be issued for my connection application to proceed?

A Section 50 Certificate is required to be issued for any development which is commercial or industrial, a subdivision or a dual occupancy/secondary dwelling to ensure that all development requirements have been completed before allowing connection into our network. This is to ensure that we have adequate capacity within our system to support your development and that our assets are adequately protected from the development.

  • Why is water/sewer showing as connected at my property however the water/sewer has been disconnected?

This would indicate that an application to disconnect these services has not been received by Hunter Water. You will need to complete this application to have the disconnection of these services recognised in our system. If you are connecting services at the same time, choose the combined connection and disconnection application form.

  • How do I know if a tee & valve (Hot Tap or Conventional install) connection is required?

The Hydraulics approval letter will state if the property requires tee and valve or drilling.

You can also check with your hydraulic consultant or your plumber.

  • How do I know if a hot tap is required?

Your plumber will apply for a tee and valve connection via the property self-service portal. Hunter Water will provide a tee and valve approval letter stating hot tap or conventional installation.

  • How do I know if a drilling is required?

If a property does not currently have a water service or if it needs to be relocated, a drilling is required to connect into our water main. Some plumbers are licenced to undertake drillings into our network, otherwise you can nominate for a Hunter Water driller to undertake the drilling on your behalf.

  • I don’t know my plumber's licence number. Why is this required?

It is important to ensure that anyone undertaking works on our network are authorised to do so. For connection and disconnections this requires all connection and disconnection works to be undertaken by a Licenced Plumber.

Further information can be found on the Building Commission NSW website.
