Raymond Terrace Wastewater Treatment Works

The Raymond Terrace Wastewater Treatment Works serves the communities of Raymond Terrace, Medowie and some parts of Heatherbrae.

It currently treats 6.4 megalitres per day and can handle wastewater from a population of up to 35,000 people.

The Raymond Terrace Wastewater Treatment Works provides secondary treatment of wastewater using the following process:

  1. screening of non-biodegradable solids and grit removal
  2. odour extraction and control facilities
  3. nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorous) removal in an aerated oxidation ditch utilising aerobic and anaerobic biological processes
  4. digestion and dewatering of biosolids for reuse
  5. UV disinfection of treated effluent.

Recycling and reuse

All biosolids produced at the plant are beneficially used for mine site rehabilitation and pasture improvement projects.

Recycled water from the plant is also used for grit and screening washing, general wash down around the plant and for grounds irrigation.

The remainder of the treated effluent is discharged to Windeyers Creek via Grahamstown Drain.

At Hunter Water, we recycle approximately 5,000 megalitres of effluent per year. Learn more about our recycling and re-use initiatives..

Future upgrades

An upgrade to the Wastewater Treatment Plant is currently progressing so that we can provide additional future capacity for the plant and improve the quality of treated effluent.

Environmental Licence Monitoring

Pollution monitoring data is collected by Hunter Water, as required under the Environment Protection Licences (EPL) issued by the NSW Environment Protection Authority (EPA).
