Why your water usage may be higher

Saving water can save you money. Small changes at home can make a big difference.

It could be as simple as checking for leaks, changing your habits or understanding what uses the most water.

If your water bill has gone up, there are a few common reasons. It might be due to how much water you are using, but not always.

Securing our water future together

On 1 July 2025, prices for water and wastewater services increased.

As our region grows and the climate becomes more unpredictable, a safe and secure water supply is more important than ever.

The new prices help us continue delivering high quality services while ensuring fairness for future bill-payers and generations to come.

Think your usage is high, but not sure why?

Your water bill includes two parts:

  • Service charges (fixed)
  • Usage charges (based on how much water you use)

If your bill is higher than usual, it might be due to increased usage. Or it could reflect a change in pricing.

This page can help you understand what might be using more water at your place.

Why you might be using more water

  • Seasonal changes

Water use tends to increase during the warmer months. If comparing your bill, compare with the same time last year rather than your previous one.

  • Guests

Having visitors stay often means more water consumption around the home.

Why not remind guests to keep their shower under four minutes by downloading the Hunter Water Spotify playlist and challenging them to be in and out before Taylor finishes singing ‘Love Story’.

And who among us wouldn’t grab a conditioner bottle to belt out ‘Dancing in the Dark’ with Springsteen?

Now that’s how you save water. And money!

  • Automatic watering systems

Often a forgotten source of water in many homes as they are 'out of sight, out of mind'.

Automatic systems are the most common reason for unexpected water use, especially when programmed to turn on overnight.

  • Pools

Adding extra water to your pool to keep it at a certain level can increase your water bill, especially if you do this often.

Try using a timer or handheld trigger nozzle to fill your pool. It will give you more control over your water usage.

  • High pressure cleaning

Pressure cleaning uses more water than you may think.

Why not sweep hard surfaces rather than washing them.

  • Washing the car

Tackle two things at once by washing your car on the grass, not in the driveway or on the street. It not only saves water and time, but your lawn gets a nice long drink as well.

  • New appliances

Recently installed or updated appliances such as washing machines, dishwashers and fridges with cold water connections can affect household water consumption.

When buying a new appliance, check the water rating. The Water Efficiency Labelling and Standards (WELS) scheme tests products for water consumption and gives a rating of up to six stars. The rating label is displayed on the product and, the more stars, the more water efficient the product.

  • Taps, toilets and hot water systems

Taps running or dripping in unused areas. Toilet cisterns leaking into wall cavities. Hot water services at the side of the house leaking water into the grass.

If it’s got anything to do with water, check it for leaks regularly.

  • Hidden leaks

An undetected or hidden leak is when the cause and any signs of water loss are not easily visible.

If you think you have a hidden leak, contact your plumber to have it repaired.

Once it has been repaired, remember to check our undetected leak rebate page to see if you’re eligible.
