Keep your fire hydrant visible
It can save valuable time during an emergency
Hunter Water works closely with Fire and Rescue NSW and the NSW Rural Fire Service (NSW RFS) to maintain around 50,000 hydrants across the Hunter.
Keeping fire hydrants clear of grass and other obstructions makes them easy to find and access, helping firefighters act quickly during an emergency.

What does a hydrant look like?
Bright yellow, cast iron, square-shaped lids with a capital 'H' on the top, helping firefighters identify them quickly.
Where to find them
Fire hydrants are placed below ground, with their bright yellow lids visible above ground. They are most often found on roads or footpaths.
In urban areas, hydrants are usually positioned along one side of the street and are about 120 metres apart.
In rural areas, they are about 220 metres apart.
You can tell when a fire hydrant is near by small indicator signs on posts, telegraph poles or along the shoulder of the road or gutter.
Access to fire hydrants
Firefighters use water hydrants to quickly access the water supply during a fire or emergency. Hunter Water field crews access for maintenance purposes.
Make sure nothing blocks or hides the hydrant near your property. It should always be free from grass, soil, mulch or garden features that could cover it.
Keep the area around the hydrant clear of bushes, tree branches or anything that could get in the way of firefighters connecting their hoses or operating the hydrant.
