Hunter Water managing water taste and odour in Grahamstown supply
Hunter Water is aware of an increase in a naturally occurring compound called MIB (Methylisoborneol) in the Grahamstown water supply. There are no adverse health effects associated with MIB and tap water remains safe to drink, however it can cause earthy, musty or swampy tastes and odours. There is no risk to public health.
Customers in the Grahamstown Water Treatment Plant catchment, throughout the Newcastle and Lake Macquarie areas, and including parts of Nelson Bay and surrounding areas, may notice a change in taste or odour. To improve removal of MIB, Hunter Water has commenced dosing powdered activated carbon (PAC). PAC is commonly used to remove these compounds and is safe.
Although MIB and another compound, geosmin, are harmless, human senses can detect their taste and smell at very low concentrations. Customers can chill water in the refrigerator to help reduce taste and odour, or add a slice of citrus fruit, cucumber or mint to improve flavour if it is noticeable.
