The Kearsley Wastewater Treatment Works serves the communities of Kearsley and Neath.

It currently treats 280 kilolitres per day of effluent per day and can handle wastewater from a population equivalent to 2050 people.

Treatment Process

Kearsley Wastewater Treatment Works consists of two oxidation ponds with overland flow of effluent to two abandoned tailings dams, where evaporation and percolation occurs.

The process consists of:

  • two oxidation ponds in series (with optional recirculation)
  • two tailings dams in series.

Surface runoff from the tailings dams is diverted via an open channel to an (unnamed) tributary of Swamp Creek, approximately 2.5 km upstream of confluence.

Discharge from the tailings dams only occurs intermittently and is dependent on rain and seasonal conditions.
