Overview
Why is the Shortland WWTW being upgraded?
The upgrade is predominantly about undertaking asset maintenance and ensuring the reliability of the WWTW into the future.
Population projects show that the current nominal capacity of the Shortland WWTW will be exceeded by 2013.
The project will increase the hydraulic capacity of the WWTW to enable increased flows into the plant and will ensure that environmental standards set by the NSW Office of Environment and Heritage are met.
There are no changes proposed to the biological treatment process.
Delivery of the upgrade
The upgrade to the Shortland WWTW will include:
- Upgrade inlet works and wet weather bypass system to service 3000 L/s
- Upgrade plant control system
- Refurbish access road
- Plant process optimisation and installation of an additional blower
- Installation of level switch in the catch/balance tank
Construction on the upgrade commenced in June 2011 and will continue for 12 months.
Construction hours will normally be Monday to Friday 7am to 6pm and 8am to 1pm on Saturday. The community will receive advance notification of any proposed works required outside of these hours.
Hunter Water will endeavour to minimise construction related impacts during the life of the upgrade and will work with local residents and other key stakeholders to keep them informed during this critical phase.
