Maitland North Rothbury Water Supply Upgrade

Overview

Maitland Water Pump Station Image

Hunter Water has commenced construction on a 10 megalitre reservoir and lead in watermain off Winders Lane, Lochinvar as part of the six stage upgrade to the Maitland North Rothbury Water supply system upgrade. The new reservoir will provide additional water storage to cater for predicted growth and will improve water security and reliability.

Currently the Maitland-North Rothbury water supply system has limited storage capacity in the event the system is off line for any reason.

The 10 megalitre reservoir will be constructed using reinforced concrete. The new reservoir when complete will be landscaped and painted so it blends into the background landscape to minimise the visual impact.

Work on the reservoir commenced in March 2012 and is expected to take twelve months to complete, weather dependent.

How this might affect you?

Some residents may experience traffic disruptions during construction and at times some roads will be temporarily closed for short periods. A traffic management plan will be in place to direct traffic safely through these areas. Some residents may also experience an increase in noise, dust and vibration during construction.

Measures will be taken to minimise any impacts generated by the works.

Your patience is appreciated as we undertake these essential construction works.

Background and Project Stages

In 2006/2007 the Department of Planning's Lower Hunter Regional Strategy projected additional growth in the Maitland and Cessnock Local Government Areas, specifically in Anambah, Lochinvar and Branxton.

As a result of this growth, Hunter Water developed a servicing strategy for the area between Maitland and North Rothbury to address a number of things, which include:

  • The anticipated future demand.
  • Additional security of supply. This ensures that if the system is offline for any reason, customers will still receive a clean water supply.
  • To eliminate low pressure issues currently experienced by 430 properties within the Rutherford and Aberglasslyn areas during peak demand periods.

Hunter Water has embarked on a six-stage upgrade of the water supply system between Maitland and North Rothbury. The following four stages are scheduled for completion by 2014.

Stage 1

Stage 1 was completed in 2008 and involved a water pump station at North Rothbury, and new trunkmains between Stoney Pinch and Thornton North.

Stage 2

Stage 2 was completed in 2010 and involved new trunkmains between Branxton and North Rothbury, within the Greta and Louth Park area.

Stage 3

Stage 3 will be delivered in three components:

Stage 3a

  • A new 10 megalitre reservoir in Lochinvar off Winders Lane.
  • Construction to commence in March 2012 and take 12 months to complete weather dependent.

Stage 3b

  • A new watermain from Rutherford to Lochinvar.
  • The tender for this stage will be awarded at the end of April 2012.
  • Construction is expected to begin in June 2012.

Stage 3c

  • A water pump station in Telarah and additional watermain from Maitland to Telarah.
  • This work is currently in detailed design phase.
  • Construction is expected to commence in early 2013.

Stage 4

  • Replacement of the existing water pump station at Lochinvar.
  • This work is currently in detailed design phase.
  • Construction expected to commence in early 2013.
