Turning passion into purpose with scholarship recipient Sophie

When she's not studying, you'll find third year Bachelor of Coastal and Marine Science student Sophie spending time outdoors, usually at the beach, snorkeling or diving.

As a recipient of the Hunter Water Women in Science Scholarship, she's passionate about combining scientific research with effective conservation communication to protect marine ecosystems.

"Growing up in beautiful Port Stephens transformed my perspective on the ocean and inspired me to pursue a career in marine science. I want to help people better understand and connect with the ocean," Sophie said.

"Having gone from being fearful of the ocean as a child to pursuing a degree in Coastal and Marine Science, I understand how knowledge and positive experiences can transform perspectives."

She is particularly passionate about protecting vulnerable marine species and coastlines, while encouraging sustainable practices and stronger community connections to the natural environment.

For her, the impact of scholarship programs extends beyond financial assistance.

"Scholarship programs like this provide far more than financial support. They create opportunities, build confidence, and help students access experiences that shape their future careers. Hunter Water's investment in women in science will have a lasting impact on both students and the communities they go on to serve," Sophie said.

By supporting local students through scholarship programs with the University of Newcastle, we're helping create opportunities for the next generation of local leaders and strengthening the connection between education, innovation and a sustainable future for our region.
