Recycled water is treated to meet stringent quality guidelines to ensure that both public health and the environment are protected.

Hunter Water receives advice from both NSW Health and the Office Environment and Heritage (OEH) on health and environmental aspects of recycled water use and quality.

Quality monitoring is carried out at critical points along the treatment and delivery stages of recycled water supply.
Used as intended, recycled water can provide a safe substitute for drinking water in a variety of applications.

  • Recycled water used in residential schemes is treated to high standard for clothes washing, flushing toilets, watering gardens, washing cars and fire fighting.
  • Less rigourous treatment is needed for the irrigation of farms and golf courses as well as some industrial processes.

In general, recycled water can be produced 'fit for purpose' and depending on a suitable level of treatment can be used in any situation.
