Trade Waste

Trade wastewater is any liquid waste and any substance contained within it discharged to the sewerage system from a business premise other than normal domestic sewage.

Only trade wastewater which complies with specific guidelines may be discharged into the sewerage system.

All companies and businesses operating in the Hunter Water area of operations and discharging trade wastewater into the sewerage system need to be aware of our trade wastewater requirements.

Trade wastewater fees consist of:

  • application fees for new trade waste customers
  • renewal fees for existing trade waste customers
  • an annual agreement fee
  • additional inspection fees (where applicable)
  • variable trade wastewater discharge fees based on the strength and volume of trade wastewater being discharged (where applicable)

    • Who is responsible for the trade wastewater discharge?

      Answer

      The trade wastewater agreement is issued to the property owner; however both property owner and occupier have a responsibility for the installation, operation and maintenance of trade wastewater pre-treatment facilities.
    • How do I pay for the fees and charges associated with the trade wastewater agreement?

      Answer

      The fees and charges for the trade wastewater agreement will be included in the property owner’s next Hunter Water Corporation account.
    • What is required if the trade wastewater discharge becomes redundant on a site?

      Answer

      Hunter Water requires the owner/occupier to inform them of cessation of operations on-site, and after inspection to confirm this, the trade wastewater agreement is cancelled.
    • What pre-treatment facility do I need for my operations?

      Answer

      Wastewater discharges from premises vary, and as such, may require different treatment facilities to meet allowed wastewater discharge characteristics. These treatment facilities may include grease arrestors, oil separators, cooling pits, lint traps, dilution pits etc.
    • What records are required to be kept on-site?

      Answer

      Current maintenance and/or cleanout records are to be kept on-site for access by Hunter Water Corporation’s trade waste officers to confirm compliant operation, maintenance and cleanout frequency of pre-treatment facilities.
