Overview of irrigation schemes

Recycled water for municipal use is currently used at a number of irrigation schemes around the Hunter, consisting of several golf courses and a TAFE college. Municipal use irrigation schemes use approximately 500ML per year.

Hunter Water supplies recycled water to the following customers for irrigation purposes:

  • The Vintage Golf Club
  • Branxton Golf Club
  • The Stonebridge Golf Club (Cessnock)
  • Waratah Golf Course
  • Kurri Kurri Golf Course
  • Easts Golf and Leisure Club
  • Kurri Kurri TAFE

Advantages of Recycled Water Use

  • reduces demand on potable supply system
  • recycled water is largely independent of weather conditions, providing a secure water source even in drought conditions
  • additional nutrients in the water reduce fertilising requirements
  • reduces the amount of treated discharge from wastewater treatment works into creeks and rivers
  • recycled water may cost less than potable water depending on level of treatment required for the end use
