Kooragang Recycled Water Scheme

The Lower Hunter's largest ever recycled water project was opened in October 2014. The Kooragang Recycled Water Scheme takes treated effluent from Shortland Wastewater Treatment Plant before purifying it with reverse osmosis technology at the Mayfield plant. Up to 3.3 billion litres of water, more pure than what falls from the sky, is delivered via an 8 kilometre pipeline to industrial users on Kooragang Island, reducing our drinking water demand and helping drought proof the Lower Hunter.
