Free Water for Footpath Cleansing

The Board decided to supply free water for street and footpath cleansing. To supply councils with water, the Board erected many ornately designed standpipes throughout its area of operations.

A report in a local newspaper around this time tells its own story: "The change from sea water to fresh water for street watering has been found very beneficial, as the sea water had disastrous effects on certain classes of goods that are sold extensively in the district."
