The Construction of Chichester Dam

By 1918, the construction of Chichester Dam was well underway.

It was necessary to divert the river from its bed before work could begin. A concrete retaining wall was built and a channel deep enough to carry normal river flow was excavated.

The lower portion of the dam, including scour pipes, was then built between the northern bank of the river and the diversion channel. Construction of the full dam was possible after the river was diverted through the scour pipes.
