Overview

The Toronto Wastewater Treatment Works (WWTW) is located off Faucett Street in the suburb of Blackalls Park, south of Newcastle and within the Lake Macquarie Local Government Area (LGA).
The plant treats wastewater from residential and non-residential developments around Lake Macquarie and combines these with treated effluent from the Edgeworth and Dora Creek Wastewater Treatment Works prior to pumping all effluent to the Belmont Ocean Outfall.
The existing inlet works at the plant requires concrete repair and does not currently have the capacity to meet projected flows.
As a result, a substantial upgrade is being undertaken to ensure the inlet works operate reliably and sustainably into the future.
The project will involve building a new inlet works to the west of the existing infrastructure and a new switch room.
The bio-filter, which assists in odour control, will also be upgraded.
Once operational, the new inlet works will replace the existing system.
Construction work will be phased so that both inlet works may operate partially and concurrently until the new system is complete.
Construction work will start in late March 2011 and continue for approximately 12 months.
The estimated cost of the upgrade is $10 million.
The project is being delivered by the Hunter Treatment Alliance, a team consisting of CH2M HILL Australia, Abigroup and Hunter Water.
