Overview

Hunter Water plans to construct the Kooragang Industrial Water Scheme. The Kooragang Industrial Water Scheme would provide high quality recycled water to industrial users in the Kooragang Island area. Upon completion, the scheme will produce 9 million litres of high quality recycled water each day, to substitute the use of drinking water, making it the largest recycled water project in the lower Hunter.
The project will involve diversion of treated effluent from the existing effluent pipeline for Shortland Wastewater Treatment Works to a new Advanced Water Treatment Plant (AWTP) at Steel River. The AWTP will use membrane micro-filtration and reverse osmosis to produce high quality recycled water before the recycled water is transported to industrial customers on Kooragang Island via a new 8 kilometre pipeline.
Recylced Water Benefits
Under the Lower Hunter Recycled Water Initiative, the Kooragang Industrial Water Scheme will lift Hunter Water's wastewater recycling rate from 9.6 per cent to around 15 per cent by 2014. Upon completion, it will be the largest recycled water project in the Lower Hunter securing additional water supply to enable critical regional growth.
The Kooragang Industrial Water Scheme is part of Hunter Water's commitment to the sustainable management of urban water and is part of the record $700 million, four year capital investment program across the entire water supply and wastewater network.
This project is partially funded through Hunter Water and the Australian Government's Water for the Future initiative through the National Urban Water and Desalination Plan.
Construction of the Kooragang Industrial Water Scheme
The AWTP is being constructed by the Hunter Treatment Alliance. The Hunter Treatment Alliance (the Alliance) is a joint venture between Hunter Water, Abigroup and CH2M Hill established to undertake a program of Wastewater Treatment Upgrades. The Alliance is a ground-breaking public-private partnership that aims to achieve value for money and share knowledge through a cooperative procurement and project delivery group.
The Alliance delivery model has proven to be a time and cost effective structure for the delivery of large scale treatment projects. The Hunter Treatment Alliance has recently completed significant upgrades of Hunter Water Wastewater Treatment works at Branxton, Paxton and Boulder Bay with work at Burwood Beach nearing completion. The Alliance is currently managing the detailed design phase of the AWTP.
Preliminary design has also commenced for the construction of the delivery and diversion pipelines associated with the Kooragang Industrial Water Scheme. The pipelines will be procured through the existing Hunter Water Corporation capital works procurement process.
