Cessnock Water Supply Upgrade

Overview

Cessnock Water Supply

Hunter Water is currently upgrading the Cessnock Water supply system to cater for future growth and improve water security and reliability. This current stage of works includes constructing a new water pumping station and watermain on Mount View Road Cessnock and a new 5 megalitre reservoir off Mount View Road, Mount View.

When complete the new reservoir will be partially located below ground level, reducing the visual impact. The reservoir will also be painted so it blends into the background landscape.

Work on the new reservoir commenced in March 2012 and is expected to take 12 months to complete.

How this might affect you?

During construction residents may notice that the site will be excavated, however it will be backfilled and a landscaping mound shaped and planted for visual screening.

Some residents may experience traffic disruptions during construction. There will be times when some roads will be temporarily closed during the project for short periods. A traffic management plan will be in place to direct traffic safely through these areas. Some residents may also experience an increase in noise, dust and vibration during construction.

Measures will be taken to minimise any impacts generated by the works. Your patience is appreciated as we undertake these essential construction works.

Background

In 2006/2007 the Department of Planning's Lower Hunter Regional Strategy projected additional growth (an increase of 21,000 lots by 2031) around Cessnock. As a result of this significant growth, Hunter Water updated its servicing strategy for the Kurri Kurri - Cessnock area to address:

  • Projected growth and demand
  • Security of supply - in line with the anticipated growth
  • Low pressure issues some residents experience in peak demand periods
  • A planned re-zoning of land from Singleton Shire Council into Hunter Water's area of operations
  • Integration of the existing Maitland and North Rothbury water supply systems with the Kurri Kurri - Cessnock system

Hunter Water has embarked on a four-stage upgrade of the water supply system within the Kurri Kurri - Cessnock area from 2009-2020.

Stage 1 is being delivered in two parts:

Stage 1(a)

The construction of new watermains within Weston, Abermain and Cessnock was completed in 2010 by Delcare Constructions Pty Ltd.

Stage 1(b)

  • A new 5 megalitre reservoir to service the area west of Cessnock - construction has commenced in March 2012
  • A new water pump station to supply the new reservoir
  • New watermains to supply water to the reservoir
  • Construction is planned to be completed by 2013

Community Working Group

As part of the Hunter Water's consultation process, a Community Working Group was established, specifically to help determine the preferred site for the proposed reservoir planned in stage 1(b).
