The financial depression had an ill effect on the Board's water production. The Board introduced economy measures, reduction of staff and the deferment of works, to minimise expenditure.

Walka Waterworks shut down as an economy move during the Depression. After 1931, the engines and pumps at Walka Waterworks were only started so the plant could be tested and overhauled, or provide an emergency supply.
