Hunter Wetlands Centre

Hunter Water’s sponsorship of Hunter Wetlands Centre Australia allows continued wetlands conservation and management of Shortland Wetlands, which is an enormously important area. Shortland Wetlands is listed as a Ramsar site – a wetlands of international significance.

Wetlands are known as ‘hotspots’ for biodiversity and often referred to as the kidneys of our landscape. Shortland Wetlands provides habitat for many species of bird, mammals, frogs and retiles, including threatened and endangered species.

This site receives stormwater flows and provides a natural processing system for this discharge.

The site is used by schools and the community as a hands-on training ground for many of Hunter Water’s areas of interest and responsibility and includes achievement of true sustainability in action encompassing environmental, social and economic outcomes for Newcastle and the Hunter Region.
