The Burwood Beach Wastewater Treatment Works serves the Newcastle City area and surrounding suburbs – taking in an area bound approximately by Dudley, Charlestown, Wallsend and Mayfield.

How it works
The Burwood Beach plant provides secondary treatment of wastewater – it is designed to operate at a very high rate and to remove solids, decrease pathogen content of wastewater and decrease oil and grease in the wastewater.
Secondary treatment is provided utilising:
- Fine screening and grit removal;
- High rate biological filtration;
- High rate activated sludge process including aeration and settling stages.
Treated effluent is discharged via an extended ocean outfall to the Pacific Ocean. Biosolids are also discharged to the ocean via a separate pipeline and diffusers.
