How it works
The plant provides secondary treatment of wastewater by the following processes:
- Screening of non biodegradable solids and grit removal;
- Odour extraction and control facilities;
- Nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorous) removal in an aerated oxidation ditch utilizing aerobic and anaerobic biological processes;
- Digestion and dewatering of biosolids for reuse in minesite rehabilitation projects;
- UV disinfection of treated effluent.
How is the treated effluent used?
All biosolids produced at the plant are beneficially used for mine site rehabilitation and pasture improvement projects.
Recycled water from the plant is used for grit and screening washing, general washdown around the plant and for grounds irrigation.
The remainder of the treated effluent is discharged to Windeyers Creek via Grahamstown Drain.
