Public Art Program
Hunter Water, in collaboration with the Loft Youth Avenue, North Lakes Youth Project and Port Stephens Council, has created a public art project which aims to develop sustainable solutions to the graffiti and vandalism of Hunter Water assets. The project is designed to both reduce incidents of 'tagging' on our infrastructure while, at the same time, providing young artists with an opportunity to positively contribute to the local community.
Research has indicated the incidence of graffiti and tagging is significantly reduced on outdoor walls and surfaces that feature murals or artistic design. The experience of a number of councils and authorities which ahve adopted graffiti management policies has reinforced this research.
In addition to enhancing the local community by improving the aesthetics of Hunter Water facilities and infrastructure, the project encourages artistic children to participate in the creation of legal wall and community murals.
In the past two years we have undertaken remedial artworks on Charlestown Reservoir, Bray Park Pump Station, Raymond Terrace Reservoir and Finnan Park Amenities Block.
