Wastewater Systems

Wastewater is the water that residential, commercial or industrial put down sinks, toilets and other drains that enter the wastewater (sewerage) system.  Hunter Water owns and operates 4,500 km of sewerage pipes, 17 Wastewater Treatment Plants (WWTP) and 391 Wastewater Pumping Stations (WWPS).

Five of the WWTP discharge via ocean outfalls at three locations, Burwood Beach, Belmont and Boulder Bay, and twelve of WWTP’s discharge either to local creeks and rivers or reused by industry or irrigators.  These systems are licenced by the Department of Environment and Climate Control, which sets performance standards and monitoring & reporting requirements.

Most of the system is via gravity mains, although the WWPS’s are located to pump water from low area’s to WWTP’s.
