Water Supply Delivery
Hunter Water supplies 150 to 370 million litres of water to approximately 220,000 homes and businesses each day. Click here to see the water distribution map.
Water is sourced from a number of catchment areas managed by Hunter Water.
The major sources supplying Newcastle and the Coalfields are Chichester Dam, the Tomago Borefield and Grahamstown Dam. Water from these sources is treated at Dungog and Tomago before being pumped into the distribution systems. These systems are interconnected with water being supplied to all areas from both sources.
The Tilligerry Peninsular and Karauh are supplied from a dedicated treatment plant located at Tanilba Bay. Water is sourced from the Northern end of the Tomago Sandbeds .
The Tomaree peninsular is supplied with water from Tomago and the Anna Bay Sandbeds . Water from the Tomago and Grahamstown sources is transferred to the Tomaree area via a dedicated trunkmain. Water is also sourced and treated locally from the Anna Bay Sandbeds at the Anna Bay and Glovers Hill plants.
All water supplied by Hunter Water is treated at water treatment plants to a standard that complies with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines (http://www.nhmrc.gov.au/publications/synopses/eh19syn.htm). Organic matter, sediment and minerals such as iron and manganese are removed, the water is disinfected with chlorine and fluoride is added to prevent tooth decay.
We then distribute the water to our customers via our network of 77 service reservoirs, 85 pumping stations and nearly 4,640 kilometres of water mains.
