Walk for WaterAid 2008
Background
In 2004 Hunter Water joined a range of other water utilities, water industry groups and aid organisations to launch a new international water charity – WaterAid Australia.
WaterAid Australia is an international aid agency dedicated to assisting poorer communities to secure water for life. WaterAid Australia is a unique partnership between the Australian water utilities, water industry and the aid sector. The focus is on empowering communities to take ownership of projects which will provide long term water supply and effective sanitation.
For around $800, a sanitation block for an entire school can be installed, with major flow on health benefits to the health and well being of the entire community, especially the children.
In late 2007, 30 Hunter Water and Mullanes staff, along with those from other supporting companies, walked the Kokoda Trail in Papua New Guinea to raise money for this worthy cause. A total of $22,000 was donated to WaterAid in December 2007, a great achievement for all who donated and participated in the trek.
The 2008 trek
Hunter Water’s Managing Director, Kevin Young, has been encouraging other companies to join us for another trek in support of WaterAid Australia with a target of raising $40,000. Kevin will personally be leading a team of 30 trekkers heading off from Sydney on 29 September and returning after 10 days of what is an exhilarating but challenging experience.
It is particularly significant this year to focus on raising funds for communities without basic hygiene as the UN declared 2008 as the International Year of Sanitation. Hunter Water and its supporters of the Walk for WaterAid 2008 trek are committed to improving the health of poorer communities.
