Why is the Dungog Shire Water and Sewer Services Transfer Taking Place?
In order to meet the commitment to sewer Clarence Town, Dungog Shire Council approached Hunter Water with a range of options to consider assisting in delivering the Clarence Town Sewer Scheme. One option was for Hunter Water to consider taking over the existing water and sewer business of the whole Dungog Shire Council area, and deliver the Clarence Town scheme.
As Hunter Water has some key infrastructure located in the Shire and the Williams River, which is a key component of Hunter Water’s water supply system, runs through the area it seemed a logical step from Hunter Water’s perspective to transfer the water and sewer assets and takeover ongoing responsibility for delivery of services.
Dungog Shire Council conducted a number of Community Information Sessions in the villages of Paterson, Gresford, Clarence Town and Dungog and presented three available options. These options were:
- Maintain the status quo and the residents of Clarence Town meet the costs of the proposed Scheme
- Consolidate the water and sewer businesses across the Shire
- Transfer the water and sewer assets to Hunter Water
Council then surveyed all their water and sewer customers to obtain feedback from the community on the proposals and decide on a preferred option. At the Council meeting on 16 October, Council agreed to transfer their water and sewer assets to Hunter Water.
There are a range of benefits to the Shire’s water and sewer customers including defined high standards of service in accordance with Hunter Water’s Operating Licence.
The benefit to Hunter Water customers is that critical infrastructure would be located within Hunter Water’s area of operations and provide greater clarity on responsibilities for catchment management.
