Water Saving Tips

Water is a precious resource. Most living things are made up of at least 60% water, including humans who are made up of approximately 70% water. We need water – our lives depend on it.

More than two thirds of the earth is covered by water but less than 1% is freshwater – 97% is too salty and the rest is ice. It is important that everyone makes an effort to conserve water. Water conservation has two aspects:

  • Using water efficiently so that there is enough for the needs of all living things
  • Keeping freshwater clean, so that it can continue to support life on earth

There’s little doubt that weather patterns in Australia are changing and that people in the Hunter are becoming increasingly conscious of water being a precious resource. At Hunter Water, one of our main aims is to educate the community about how to save water and encourage consumers to be water efficient in the home and garden in  businesses and at school.

We also provide information on water saving products and operate other programmes to inform and help our customers save water. These include:

  • Rainwater tank rebates - Hunter Water customers that are considering installing a rainwater tank at an existing home are eligible to apply for a rebate ranging up to $1500 depending on the size of the tank being installed
  • Recycled water - recycling water in homes is an innovative and environmentally conscious way to value water as a precious resource – we even offer dual reticulation in some areas
  • Grey water
