Connecting & Disconnecting Services
How to connect to Hunter Water
If you have bought an existing property, the water supply to a property is not disconnected when the property changes hands, so you should have supply already connected. (If you have moved into rented accommodation, the managing agent should read the water meter when a tenant moves in/out, to calculate the correct usage amount.)
If you are building a new house or residential dwelling and need to connect to our water and sewer services you will need to have your plans stamped either clear of the sewermain and/or building over the sewermain by Hunter Water prior to taking them to Council. Once plans are stamped by us this is what you need to do:
Step 1
Have your plans stamped by the Council
- Your plans must have been stamped by your local council before applying to Hunter Water for a connection to the sewer.
Step 2
Choose a licensed plumber
- You are obliged by law to ensure that anyone doing plumbing work is licensed by the Department of Fair Trading.
- By phoning the Department’s Home Advisory Centre in Newcastle on (02) 4925 7000, you can do a quick, free check on your plumber.
Step 3
If your property does not have a prelaid seervice, you will needdecide whether your plumber or Hunter Water will be doing your watermain drilling
- To connect to the water supply, a drilling will have to be made into the watermain.
- You have a choice about who performs the drilling. Either your licensed plumber can do it, or it can be done through Hunter Water.
- If you choose the drilling service provided by Hunter Water, booking and costs can be obtained from our Call Centre by phoning 1300 657 657.
Step 4
Make a ‘Services Application’ at Hunter Water - either you or your plumber can do this
- Bring a copy of the plan which has been stamped by your Council to any Hunter Water Customer Centre.
- You will need to pay for your application fees, and if Hunter Water are doing the drilling, the fee for this also.
- Our staff will assist you in completing a ‘Services Application’ form.
To complete the form, you will need to bring along the following information which your plumber can provide:
- The size of your private water service (standard residential size is 20mm).
- The size of the drilling to the watermain.
- If your plumber is doing the drilling, the date and approximate time it will be done.
- Your plumber’s licence number, name and phone number.
- The date when the water meter frame will be ready for our Meter Contractors to install the meter.
You are now ready to connect the water and/or sewer
Step 5
Connecting your services
Water:
- Your water will be connected first.
- Confirm that the meter frame ready date is suitable to your plumber. By phoning our Call Centre on 1300 657 657 this date can be changed after the application is made with no extra cost to you, providing you give Hunter Water at least 24 hours notice.
- If you booked Hunter Water to do the drilling, tell your plumber the drilling day and time. If the drilling hasn't been booked, you or your plumber can do so by simply phoning our Call Centre on 1300 657 657.
Sewer:
- Confirm with your plumber that they will book the required plumbing audit inspections with Hunter Water prior to completing the sewer connection work. They can do this by contacting our Call Centre on 1300 657 657. Hunter Water will update your property information to reflect that the property has connection to the sewer system once the connection has been completed.
