Our Services
Existing customers
Hunter Water provides water and sewerage services to almost half-a-million people from five local government areas – Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Cessnock and Port Stephens.
If you live in an area that is connected to our services you will already have access to our water and sewerage systems. We supply high quality drinking water, with reliable water pressure with as few interruptions to the service as possible to our customers.
We explain more about your water supply including how to read your water meter and give details about the special arrangements we make for customers who need to use a lot of water at home, such as dialysis patients.
We also provide sewerage, or wastewater services, to our customers as well as making sure that stormwater flows are managed.
New customers
If you live in an area in our region that is not connected to our services we have a process for ensuring we assess everyone’s needs fairly.
Our policy is that ‘user pays’ for new connections, as providing water and sewerage services enhances the value of a property. Usually developers are charged (see developer charges ) for our costs in providing new infrastructure and services – this mostly happens when a property is subdivided or new dwellings built.
More information about what you need to do if you are in this position is found in property development .
If some cases, there are ‘pockets’ of unsewered properties within existing developed areas. In these cases we understand that not everyone can afford to connect to our supply. If you are in an unsewered ‘pocket’ and would like service, please consult your council to determine their position regarding residents who may not be in a position to connect. We will only provide services when there is a written indication from a clear majority of residents that they are prepared to meet the costs involved.
