Checking your sewer service

Your responsibilities

Every property both receives water through our pipe system and sends away wastewater through our drains. Your property’s drainage system connects to our sewerage system through a small connection point referred to as the “junction”.

As the property owner you are responsible for maintaining your property’s wastewater system up to the “junction” where Hunter Water’s responsibility begins.

The junction’s location is indicated at surface level, by the sewer shaft or your inspection point.

How to find blockages

You may notice liquid overflowing (surcharging) from the outside drain, which is known as the gully.

It may also overflow from Hunter Water’s access chamber that may be located in your property or in the street.

The blockage may be caused by tree roots, inappropriate material being put down the drains, sections of pipe collapsing, ground subsidence debris, siltation, etc.

If a blockage, or sewer choke occurs in your private sewer pipe system, you should contact a licensed plumber to fix the problem.

When to contact us

If you believe the blockage is located in our part of the sewerage system, please contact us for help.

Our customer service representatives will assist you in determining whether the problem is in your private wastewater or Hunter Water’s system.

Depending on what you tell us, our customer service representative will either:

  • advise you to contact a licensed plumber
  • arrange for Hunter Water’s operational team to visit your property to investigate the problem further.
