Community Involvement

Community Reference Group (TDCRG)

In February 2007, as part of the consultative process for the Tillegra Dam project, Hunter Water established the Tillegra Dam Community Reference Group (TDCRG).

The purpose of the TDCRG is to support the community engagement process and, where necessary, provide advice to achieve better project and community outcomes.

The TDCRG operates under defined Terms of Reference and will run for the duration of the environmental and engineering assessment phases of the project, which are expected to roll out across 2007 and 2008.

The TDCRG includes representatives of key stakeholder groups from the local area and Hunter Water.  It is chaired by Brett Peterkin, an independent facilitator engaged by Hunter Water to co-ordinate the TDCRG’s activities.  Members’ contact details are available.

Community Forum -  6 August 2008

The Tillegra Dam Community Reference Group hosted a community forum on 6 August 2008 which had a number of speakers discuss situations where they as individuals or as a community overcame some form of adversity and reaped benefits from the situation.  The attached presentations were given on the night.

The TDCRG meets monthly, with notes from each meeting available below and also at Dungog Library (viewing only).  Meeting notes are initially posted on this website in draft form until formally ratified by TDCRG members at the following meeting.

Sub-groups

The Tillegra Dam Community Reference Group has established two sub-groups to provide recommendations on important components of the project.  A summary of each sub-group’s activities is provided in the TDCRG meeting notes each month. A summary of each sub-group's activities is provided in the TDCRG Meeting notes each month.

Quart Pot/Munni Cemetery Sub-group

The existing Quart Pot/Munni Cemetery is within the inundation zone of the proposed Tillegra Dam and will require relocation, should the dam proposal receive the necessary planning approvals. The Quart Pot/Munni Cemetery Sub-group has been established to consider matters related to the relocation of the cemetery, including guiding Hunter Water in providing information to assist affected families as the project progresses. The sub-group is chaired by community representative, Anne MacDonald, who can be contacted on 4995 3296.

Economic Opportunities Sub-group

The Economic & Tourism Sub-group has been established to consider potential economic and tourism development opportunities for the Dungog area should the dam proposal proceed. The sub-group is chaired by Brett Peterkin, who can be contacted on 4933 3802, email brett.peterkin@bigpond.com

History of Community Activities

Communication and consultation with the community on the way forward are an integral part of the Tillegra Dam Project.

There are a range of activities that make up Hunter Water’s communication program, including regular meetings of the Tillegra Dam Community Reference Group, weekly “open house” in the area, public information sessions on key issues (eg dam safety), one-on-one meetings with local residents, project briefings, and publication of a monthly newsletter to keep stakeholders informed on the status of the project.
