Kearsley WWTW

The Kearsley Wastewater Treatment Works serves the communities of:

  • Kearsley
  • Neath.

It currently treats:

  • 250 Kilolitres per day of effluent per day.

The Kearsley plant can handle wastewater from a population equivalent to:

  • 2000 people.

How it works

The treatment works consists of two oxidation ponds with overland flow of effluent to two abandoned tailings dams, where evaporation and percolation occurs. As illustrated in the process flow diagram, the plant consists of:

  • two oxidation ponds in series (with optional recirculation)
  • two tailings dams in series.

Surface runoff from the tailings dams is diverted via an open channel to an (unnamed) tributary of Swamp Creek, approximately 2.5 km upstream of confluence. Discharge from the tailings dams only occurs intermittently and is dependent on rain and seasonal conditions.
