Tanilba Bay WWTW

The Tanilba Bay Wastewater Treatment Works, commissioned in 1993, serves the communities of:

  • Lemon Tree Passage
  • Mallabula
  • Tanilba Bay.

It currently treats:

  • 1.07 megalitres per day.

The Tanilba Bay plant can handle wastewater from a population equivalent to:

  • 10,000 people.

How it works

The plant provides secondary treatment of the wastewater through the following processes:

  • Screening of solids and grit removal;
  • Extended aeration through intermittently decanting aeration tanks for nutrient removal (nitrogen only);
  • UV disinfection of treated effluent;
  • Lagooning of biosolids for later dewatering and reuse in minesite rehabilitation projects.

How is the treated effluent used?

Effluent from the treatment works is returned to the environment via four sand infiltration ponds located along the eastern boundary of the plant. Flows are currently directed to Ponds 1, 2 & 3, which are operated in dry/wet mode and Pond 4 which is retained for wet weather flows.
