Morpeth wastewater system upgrade
Hunter Water plans to spend approximately $35 million over seven years to upgrade the wastewater network in the Morpeth WWTW catchment. The work will be done in four stages and aims to improve the performance of the network during wet weather and to provide capacity for future development in Thornton North and Somerset Park.
First stage already underway
Stage 1 of the project involves building two new wastewater pumping stations and approximately 5km of pipelines to transport wastewater to Morpeth Wastewater Treatment Works. The new stations will be located adjacent to John Arthur Avenue at Thornton and to the north of Raymond Terrace Road in the Thornton North development area.
An existing pump station will also be upgraded and flows will be diverted from the existing network in Beresfield to reduce the likelihood and impact of wet weather overflows.
Construction work on Stage 1 began in March 2007 and is expected to be completed by mid 2008.
