29 Woodford Street was acquired by Hunter Water in 1987 for a wastewater treatment works (now decommissioned).
The site is part of an original land grant made to AW Scott in 1837. Early land records are patchy, however it is apparent the land was owned by James and Alexander Brown and later their nephew John Brown. John Brown established a farm on the site. The Browns were prominent colliery proprietors who acquired a local mine formerly owned by Mr James Eels.
John Brown died in 1830 and the property later transferred to Coal & Allied. The farmhouse and its outbuildings were bulldozed but the remains are still visible today. The abandoned rail line (Minmi – Hexham) cutting is visible at the northern boundary of the property with the original railway sidings still in place.
